What is the DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy System?

The DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy System is the World's Most Advanced Non-Surgical treatment for low back conditions and the DTS System is the only device certified to administer IVDDD (Intervertebral Disc Decompression and Distraction) Therapy®.  It is a computer controlled mechanized high tech pain reduction and healing system that was developed after many years of research and development by a team of physicians, including a renowned neurosurgeon, and bioengineers.  The DTS offers an advanced technique to doctors for non-invasive treatment of the spine.  The DTS System is manufactured in the USA by the Chattanooga Group, the world's largest manufacturer of rehabilitation equipment for treating skeletal, muscular, neurological, and soft tissue disorders. 

 

 How does DTS Therapy work?

The patient is instructed to lay face up (supine) on the specially designed table where they are fitted with unique pelvic and torso harnesses.  The harness is then attached by belts and ropes to the Triton DTS Decompression Head.  The table is then adjusted to create an angle of pull between 10 and 55 degrees to target the specific disc level.  The system is quickly programmed via touch pad for intervals of 50 seconds of decompression followed by 20 seconds of partial relaxation.  The amount of decompressive force, from 10 to 200 pounds, is then programmed in followed by treatment time.  This entire procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Patients requiring cervical decompression will undergo the same procedure, but will be fitted with a Saunders cervical decompression harness instead of the pelvic and torso harnesses.  The Saunders harness is the most advanced cervical decompression accessory available.

 

What are the indicated uses? 

Patients with acute and chronic low back pain can benefit from DTS Therapy.  Specifically, the system provides a program of treatments for relief from pain for those patients suffering with lumbar and cervical pain.  The treatments are physician prescribed following specific protocols to ensure maximum, lasting improvement.  The protocols use a combination of static, intermittent, and cycling decompressive forces to relieve pressure on the structures that may be causing the back pain.

Is the DTS System used after spinal surgery or contra-indicated?

The application of DTS Therapy at some point following surgery is NOT CONTRA-INDICATED.  It has been used as follow-up therapy for patients that continue to complain of post-surgical back pian.  This "dual approach" seems to offer an advantage especially in those patients that have more than one level of herniation in which only the major segment was excised.

 

What conditions are contra-indicated for decompression therapy?

Although the DTS Therapy system is an inherently safe procedure that can be used, without complications, for a wide variety of anatomical dysfunctions of the lumbar spine, which are commonly associated with back pain.  Patients with the following conditions should NOT be treated with decompression therapy:  Severe Osteoporosis, Unstable Post Surgical Conditions, Vertebral Fractures, and any kind of Surgical Hardware.  Contraindications are pathological lesions or congenital deformities of the vertebral column that disrupt the integrity of the vertebral and ligamental structures.

 

What is the difference between DTS Therapy and Traction?

The DTS system uses progressive loading to overcome the intrinsic muscle response, which reduced conventional traction's ability to generate enough intradiscal pressure to create a vacuum effect on the spinal disc.  In the DTS system the computer controlled forces are slowly added to reduce the guarding effect of the spinal stabilizer muscles.  The other advantage DTS has over conventional traction is the ability to create a "pumping effect" on the disc by increasing and decreasing the load as the treatment is given.

 

What results can I expect from DTS Therapy?

Most patients are scheduled for 20 twenty minute treatments over a 8-week period. The typical patient feels relief as fast as the first 5 to 8 treatments. Pre and post treatment MRIs have shown 50% reduction in the size and extent of herniations after 6 weeks of treatments. Clinical Studies confirm 86% of patients with disc problems reported relief with the DTS Therapy System.

 

                                   

According to the self-rated Owestry Pain Scale, treatment was successful in 86% of the 219 patients included in the study.  Treatment success was defined by a reduction in pain to 0 or 1 on the pain scale.  The perception of pain was none to occasional without any further need for medication or treatment in 188 patients.  These patients reported complete resolution of pain, lumbar range of motion was normalized, and there was recovery of any sensory or motor loss.  The remaining 31 patients reported significant pain and disability, despite some improvement in their overall pain and disability score.

Yes, the DTS Therapy System has received Federal Drug Administration (FDA) clearance as a Class II Medical Device with 510(k) listing.

How does disc decompression on the DTS System relieve pain?

However, some individuals whose lifestyle or work environment tend to expose them to higher risk factors, have found that a follow-up or maintenance program of decompression treatment sessions offers a measure of protection against disabling exacerbations of their back pain syndrome. Patients in this category usually develop, in consultation with their IVDDD Therapy® certified physicians, their own rhythm of maintenance visits that keeps them free of problems. The onset of osteoporosis, particularly in senior patients, may also necessitate maintenance treatments.
